The Huntington

It has been a month since I was in San Marino at the Huntington.

I randomly selected my favorite photos, with out any sense of what to write, just the notion that I do not keep a journal, yet see so many things worth sharing.

As I write it dawns on me, that I have chosen a collection of light bulbs, an obvious symbol of my father, a collector and an electrician.

Audubon's Birds of America, the first Elephant folio I have seen in person. This book was spoke of often in my home, as we had lesser versions. I didn't even take a picture of the Gothenburg Bible only a few steps away.

The gardens are filled with Cycads, succulents, and plants that put off the smell of carrion, because they don't use the sweet smell of life to attract bees for pollination, but the stench of death to attract flies.

Last year at SCTA Chico went 219+mph on his first pass, but snapped a valve on the second.

He is back this year hoping to go 220+ & getting into the 'two club' and claim the record last year he came so close to obtaining.

Of course the first day of rain I've seen in months is the day the racers arrive.

Bonneville is unpredictable, but I benefit from visits of bored racers killing time.

The Seegers are dear my family.

Their house is our is our home in NYC.

Aidan, Sienna, Bobby & I went sledding when the City was at a stand still during last December's white out. I love that little boy.

Aidan has ALD, I don't know what that is, but I am learning, & I know it is serious enough to require bone marrow.

Bobby can be a scary dude, but this has brought him to his knees.

It breaks my heart to know how E. & Bobby are hurting.

The interblognet has created a really cool scene.

I was completely impressed with so many bikes at born free.

Being so used to Sturgis, Daytona & the likes, this little deal, with only a fraction of the bikes drawn by the larger venues, just ruled.

Literally more neat machines than I have seen at events with 100 times the volume.

I thought it was very appropriate that it was located in the very place that held the Hootenanny, as the faces were familiar, but the the pompadours were traded in for beards & lovely locks.

My dear friend Roger comes right to my studio & does me right every time, my travel scheduled jacked that up.

Jason & I hadn't shaved or had haircuts in months, we were terrified we would lose each other at the event, so we made a call.

Well past closing, Donnie & his crew at Hawleywood's in Costa Mesa dialed us in.

Proper man pampering, is all I can say.

Lotions & creams, strait razors & clippers made fine gents of us both... well as much grooming could do.

We left the next day, according to the clock, prettier & bags o' goodies to boot. Those boys wouldn't take a dime! I'd tip my hat, but my hair looks so damn good, I won't be wearing one for a while.

European Concours' de Elegance have long recognized the value in leaving a vehicle in the state it was found.

Events in the states have caught on, but many California over restorers have had their way with machines that were more valuable pre-restoration.

High profile events tend to be deceiving, because what wins the highest accolades, is a vehicle that often began as only fraction of what you see. A restored machine, by definition, means an existing machine is brought back to its former glory. What really takes place is the replacing, remanufacturing, & recreating of a machine that now is brought to modern day specs, of paint, polish & detail, that far surpasses the level of quality that existed in the state the machine began.

Unmolested machines, virgins, original paint, as raced, & a clear provenance, backed with a paper trail of photos, timing certs, & news clippings, are held in higher esteem to my point of view.

What is even more precious than the vehicle that just rolled off the show room floor, is that rare bird, that just rolled of the track.

I know toy collectors that use the phase, "the right red" & JJ's new toy is just right!

I noticed this bike well over a decade ago at the Scera Theatre in Orem, Utah.

I would ask about it often, & no one ever return my calls.

Then they remodeled the place and almost ruined this bike.

It is completely original, but they had an insensitive amateur put some kind of clear coat on it, really bad bicycle tires and the wrong seat post, that came straight out of the frame, unlike the original that angled at more than 90 degrees to bring the seat low & back. The seat should sit flush with the frame, & there is even residue from the original friction tape that was rapped around the nose of the seat & thru the top frame tube. The seat used to sit a good 6" a top the post & they did lower it, perhaps the only concession they made to my whining. Worst of all it was put behind glass.

This was a local guy that was ranked nationally, and raced & beat the best in the pre teens era. His leather helmet, trophies, photos, gloves, extra carb & a brief write up of the his history all complement the provenance of this well prserved race machine. His name was Theodore M. Samuelson & he was monikered "The Mormon Daredevil" & the "Pride of Provo". In about 1996, when I was sculpting & doing heavy research on this subject, I wanted to used this bike as a model, & quite frankly wanted to own it really bad. I was never called back or given the time of day, & when it was "cleaned up" I was really upset, for I would have conserved it, much better, just for the right to study it up close. I go back from time to time, but it really bothers me to see this beast in a cage. It is like the old lion I remember at the L.A. Zoo that just sat there waiting to die.

The Angel of Death

I have seen this sculpture three times in the past, and knew it was something special.

The problem, being that in St. Peter's Basilica, it is roped off, I could never get closer than 40 feet.

This time I was escorted by my dear friend Alfonso & his brother, who is one of the Swiss Guard. They allowed me to go beyond the fences...

This sculpture is the crown to a doorway, the winged skeleton holding an hour glass is titled, the Angel of Death. This gold guided bronze sculpture is the keeper of time. The wall is of a black marble, rust colored marbled carved exquisitely in the form of a veil, is being lifted.

Beyond the door, is for only those invited. I passed thru and will respect that which is not public.

After an illuminating day behind closed doors at the Vatican, my friends from the Rome chapter of the Hells Angels picked me up for dinner, to round out my theological sojourn.

Because many different clubs shared the same names, on occasion I have come in contact with pieces that tie to currently existing clubs, & have tried to do the right thing by those clubs.

The sad truth is that after amassing as any cuts as I have many wholes are left.

In far less than 1000 words I will touch the tip of an iceberg that will explain why this photo is no match for the words behind it.

Bobby Beausoleil was a handsome kid from Santa Barbara who saw thru the hippie scene. He was a throw back, as many of the bike rider of the sixties were, holding on to greased hair en leu of flowing locks.

When he moved to the Haight-Ashbury, he was novel.

Kenneth Anger, SFC's attempt at an Andy Warhol, fell in love.

He wanted Bobby to star in Lucifer Rising & Bobby wanted to do the sound track.

They moved in together, Bobby was straight, Kenneth was not.

Kenneth was attracted to straight men & you must know that the motorcycle classic, Scorpio Rising, was filmed using straight men (not actors)working on their bikes to light hearted pop music of the 50's playing in the background for a genius effect that may make you uncomfortable to ever wear a leather jacket again.

(p.s. I turned Cole Foster onto this cult classic & it remains one of our favorites)

The two got in a fight... not Cole & I.... Kenneth & Bobby & the latter moved to the SFV.

About this time Cole & I were little boys living in the area.

Bobby felt the southern scene to be much heavier & for him it was. He began hanging out with the Manson Family & was desperate to be part of the STRAIGHT SATAN MC.

In an attempt to impress the MC he scored $1000. worth of mescaline from a Family friend.

The Club was not happy with the junk & sent him get their money back.

He tied the guy up, took the titles to his cars, & pressed him for money.

He was there with a couple of Family girls & somebody called Charlie. He showed up & cut off the dudes ear & left. A day later Bobby killed the guy to keep him quiet. He penned 'Political Piggy' on the wall in the guys blood & he too left.

A week or so later the Manson Family made history that even I remember as a little boy hearing it on the local news.(13 channels then... maybe 10 worked)

Apparently Bobby & the Family were quite afraid of the STRAIGHT SATANS and wanted to believe public to believe the murders were politically radical in nature.

This is just another version of Bobby & the SS... but have you ever heard it?

I am in the mood to preach again.

Looking at this 10+ years old photo of the most important things in my life.

The kids, the books, the bikes, & the clays.

This brings me to my diatribe based on biased observation.

I genuinely care what people think, I suppose I always have & will.

I want the kids to be proud of me, hopefully a book will provide an answer, the bikes are a selfish life long impulse, & the sculptures are an urge.

If I love you, like you, admire you, or appreciate you in any way, I want you to recognized me.

Even if I completely disagree with someone I like, on any subject, I still enjoy them.

What my question is to anyone reading this self indulgent rant, is why do my rock star friends & my awkward kid's friends claim;

"I don't care what other people think!"

I don't buy it.

The guy who gets up, pulls the sweater that his grandma bought him 4 birthdays ago, because it is the top one on the pile his mom put in his closet for him, does this in the dark, so it is completely random if it matches his pants & goes to a job that required the least amount of his effort to obtain. That ruler doesn't care what people think.

Me, in my stinky unwashed old Levis, beat up Wescos or my perfectly pressed small tag Dickies & pleated Pendleton, my Langlitz jacket & hand made hat, my goatee & slicked back hair... you get it, I care.

You, with your Stacey Adams, wife beater & tattoos, you care.

You, with your long hair, died hair or shaved head, you care.

So why do I hear & read so many people say;

"If I really cared about what other people think, I wouldn't have pursued Rock & Roll music- I'd still be pushing a mop."

In the motorcycle community, I hear something like, "I wear leather, have tattoos, long hair & ride a loud bike, because I don't care what people think.

Skaters, Surfers, Bikers, Punks, Vatos, Rockers, Emos, Rock-a-billies, Car Builders & perhaps most of all, Artists all claim not to care what other's think, yet I honestly believe it is quite the opposite.

All these super neat & interesting people are just that, because they care, maybe not what their mom thinks, but most certainly, what their peers think.

I have been thinking about this claim for decades.

There was a girl in high school who I had a terrible crush on.

She woke up several hours before school each day & got into full Siouxsie Sioux attire... I loved her for it, but in Psychology class when she said "I dress this way because I don't care what people think", I disagreed, in front of everybody, and we went from being friends to acquaintances.

I get what happened then... never was clever with the ladies, but I wonder if she still thinks that in high school she really didn't care what people thought.

Are my adult friends & my kid's friends who claim, not to care, really that punk rock/hardcore/anti-social & it is just insecure me who dwells on this trite stuff, or do nonconformists just conform to nonconformity?
